In the past year, high-end washing machines have taken a major leap forward with the introduction of washing and drying machines, which stirred up the market and attracted both domestic and international manufacturers to enter this growing sector. In 2006, with the upcoming national drying standard, the integration of drying functions into washing machines may lead to a significant market boom.
It is expected that the national standard for washing machine drying will be introduced this year. According to experts from the China Household Electrical Appliances Research Institute, the process has already started, with relevant experts being gathered to finalize the standard. It is possible that the standard could be officially released within the next few months.
Industry analysts believe that the new standard will address two key issues in the market: drying time and drying temperature. Currently, most drying washing machines on the market use a timer-based system, requiring users to manually set the drying duration. Once set, the machine operates on a fixed schedule, which can result in over-drying or under-drying. This not only affects the quality of the clothes but also makes it difficult for consumers to achieve the ideal “wash and wear†experience.
The drying temperature is another key aspect that may be regulated. Traditional dryers often use constant temperature settings, typically at 80°C or 120°C, regardless of the fabric type. This one-size-fits-all approach can damage delicate fabrics, cause discoloration, and reduce the lifespan of clothing. Moreover, different materials require separate drying cycles, making the process inconvenient for users.
The introduction of national standards is expected to significantly boost the washing and drying machine market. Following the trial launch in 2005, the market is anticipated to see a surge in 2006. As a premium product, washing and drying machines have become a focal point for leading manufacturers such as Haier, LG, Samsung, and Electrolux. Domestic production bases are also ramping up to meet the rising demand, signaling the start of a large-scale expansion in the industry.
Similar to how washing machines evolved from an introductory phase to a booming market in 2003, 2006 is expected to mark a turning point for washing and drying machines. After the initial exploratory phase in 2005, the market is set to reach its peak in terms of both production and sales.
Globally, drying drum washing machines have become the norm, with Canada reaching an 80% penetration rate. In Japan, the market share has grown from 3% two years ago to 18%, with sales increasing by 124% in 2004. In China, although still a new product, 60.7% of consumers expect drum washing machines to include drying functions. However, the current market penetration remains uneven, with 15% of sales in major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen, compared to just 8% in other regions.
In 2006, both domestic and international manufacturers are focusing on large-capacity drying drum washing machines, aiming to capture a larger share of the high-end market and drive further growth in the industry.
