National Special Chemical Material Technology Seminar Held

From August 28 to 29, a group of experts and scholars from the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation, China National Nuclear Material Corporation, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tsinghua University, along with representatives from companies specializing in advanced chemical materials, gathered in Urumqi. The event aimed to explore ways to enhance communication between the supply and demand sides of national specialty chemical materials, as well as to promote the integration of military and civilian development efforts. It is reported that China's specialty chemical materials industry began taking shape in the 1950s. Over the decades, numerous key projects have been launched, including rocket propellants, heavy water, aerospace-grade glass, aramid fibers, carbon fiber, marine coatings, and silicon fluoride. These efforts have led to the development of thirteen major new chemical materials. For half a century, China’s self-research and production of specialty chemicals have played a crucial role in major national projects such as the “Two Bombs and One Satellite,” advanced fighter jets, tanks, artillery, naval vessels, military electronics, and other cutting-edge defense systems. With the rapid advancement of high-tech fields like the defense and aerospace industries, there is an increasing demand for higher-performance and more specialized materials. The requirements for supporting systems, management structures, and demand assurance have become stricter. However, the current lack of communication between suppliers and users has hindered the growth of the industry. Delegates at the meeting emphasized the urgent need for stronger coordination and support from industry organizations, highlighting the importance of forming a unified plan for the development of specialty chemical materials. In response to the growing needs of the sector, the meeting proposed the establishment of the "Special Committee on Specialty Chemical Materials" under the China Petrochemical Association. This initiative aims to create a comprehensive platform that brings together expertise, equipment, and human resources from the petrochemical industry, universities, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the military system. By integrating these resources, the committee will help build a more cohesive and efficient supporting system, benefiting both national defense and high-tech sectors. It will also facilitate the dual-use of military and civilian technologies, driving the sustainable growth of the specialty chemical materials industry.
