The "High-tech and Excellent Ship Key Technology Development Special," a key project under the National Development and Reform Commission's "Tenth Five-Year Plan," has successfully passed acceptance by the China Shipbuilding Corporation, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, and the China Shipbuilding Engineering Society in Beijing. This initiative was launched to advance the development of cutting-edge technologies in the shipbuilding sector and enhance China’s position in the global maritime industry.
The project spanned over two years, with the China Shipbuilding Corporation and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation acting as the main sponsors. The China Shipbuilding Engineering Society served as the supervisory body, coordinating efforts among 13 affiliated enterprises and institutions. The research focused on several critical areas, including the development of innovative technologies for bulk carriers, optimization of tanker designs, upgrading of container ship series, advancement of large-film LNG ship construction, and the development of key technologies for ro-ro passenger ships. A total of 320 million yuan was invested in this comprehensive research program.
The outcomes of the project have been widely applied across various vessel types, such as 174,000-ton bulk carriers, VLCC tankers, 8,000 TEU container ships, 147,000 cubic meter film-type LNG ships, and 16,000-ton ro-ro passenger ships. By the end of 2005, more than 200 vessels had incorporated these advanced technologies, significantly improving the efficiency and technical standards of China’s shipbuilding industry. These achievements have not only enhanced the competitiveness of Chinese shipbuilders but also brought substantial economic and social benefits.
This special project marks an important step taken by national authorities to support the growth of the domestic shipbuilding industry. Through a collaborative model involving production, research, and academic institutions, the project ensured successful execution and timely completion. It reflects a strong commitment to innovation and technological advancement in China’s maritime sector.
