Large Coal Fully-mechanized Coal Mining Equipment Will Lead the Development of Coal-forming Machine Industry

With the rapid growth of China's coal industry in recent years, the dependent coal machinery sector has also gained increasing attention. The release of key policy documents such as "Some Opinions on Accelerating the Healthy Development of the Coal Industry" last year, the National Coal Industry Science and Technology Conference, and the recently introduced structural adjustment policies by the National Development and Reform Commission have all emphasized the development of large-scale underground coal mining equipment. Industry experts note that the emergence of such advanced machinery is not only a technological breakthrough but also an inevitable trend in the evolution of the coal machinery sector. Developing coal machinery manufacturing is crucial for China, which is the world’s largest coal producer and consumer. Given its abundant coal reserves and limited oil resources, coal remains a central component of China’s energy strategy. Rising global oil prices have further reinforced the strategic importance of domestic coal resources. To build a strong coal industry, robust machinery manufacturing capabilities are essential. However, outdated production technologies remain a major obstacle. Currently, only 42% of coal mining operations are mechanized, with many small mines still relying on outdated methods. To address this, the government has set ambitious goals: by 2010, large and medium-sized coal mines should achieve 95% and 80% mechanization, respectively. Experts highlight that major projects like large-scale underground mining equipment aim to support high-yield, efficient coal production. This includes full-technology systems for thick coal seams producing 6–10 million tons annually, fully automated systems for thin seams producing 1.5–2 million tons, and fully mechanized short-wall systems for over 1 million tons. Additionally, rapid excavation systems are being developed to enhance productivity. The development of these large-scale systems not only meets the needs of the coal industry but also provides a significant opportunity to elevate China’s technical standards. More importantly, it ensures the sustainable exploitation of China’s vital energy resources. Despite progress, the coal machinery industry still faces challenges. Many companies suffer from weak system integration capabilities and limited market competitiveness. While some progress has been made in localizing coal equipment, systemic issues persist. Most efforts focus on individual machine design and manufacturing, leaving system-level development and integration underdeveloped. Currently, only a few enterprises, such as Shanxi Coking Coal Group and China Coal Machinery Engineering Equipment Group, possess integrated manufacturing capabilities. The industry’s lack of innovation and technological advancement has widened the gap with international standards. Experts suggest that a combination of technology introduction and independent R&D is essential for future growth. As global industrial trends shift, China’s coal equipment sector must adapt, restructure, and scale up to meet new demands.
