After over two years of development, Shanxi Province has successfully established two major coal chemical equipment manufacturing bases. The Taiyang Heavy Machinery Group has built a 30,000-square-meter facility, while the Shanxi Fengxi Group has developed a 50,000-square-meter base for non-standard coal chemical equipment. These projects mark a significant step forward in the province's coal chemical industry, which now covers the design and production of high-pressure vessels, towers, glass-lined reactors, filtration systems, and compressors.
This information was shared at a recent coal chemical equipment manufacturing meeting held in Shanxi by the Shanxi Chemical Equipment Company. Over the past few years, the rapid growth of the coal chemical sector has driven strong demand for specialized equipment, leading to the formation of these two key bases.
Shanxi Fengxi Base has made remarkable progress in producing unit equipment for industries such as fertilizers, methanol, coal tar processing, and coke oven gas conversion. It has achieved 17 technological innovations, including the design and manufacture of China’s first demonstration set of ash fusion coal pressure gasifiers. The base also overcame challenges in large heat exchanger calculations beyond GB151 standards, successfully creating the largest falling film evaporator in China with a heat transfer area of 4,100 square meters and a weight of 157 tons. Collaborations with China Tianchen Chemical Engineering have led to the development of devices for coke oven gas conversion, producing ammonia, methanol, and dimethyl ether. Additionally, it has independently developed methanol reactor technology, with projected sales revenue reaching 1 billion yuan by 2010.
Meanwhile, the Taizhong Group's coal chemical equipment base focuses on pressurized gasification systems from global manufacturers like Shell, Texaco, GSP, and Lurgi. It also produces synthetic fertilizers, methanol, dimethyl ether, and coal-to-oil equipment, along with coke oven gas and coal bed gas conversion systems. With an annual output value exceeding 1 billion yuan, it is expected to become the largest producer of coal chemical equipment in Shanxi.
Chen Shihai, deputy inspector from the National Development and Reform Commission, emphasized that between 2006 and 2020, China will invest over one trillion yuan in the coal chemical industry, with half allocated to equipment. Future investments will focus on new technologies and advanced equipment, aligning with the current developments in Shanxi.
According to recent data, out of the $13.974 billion in investment announced at the recent Coal Expo, $5 billion was directed toward Shanxi’s coal chemical industry, making up 35% of the total. In response to this momentum, Shanxi is accelerating its equipment manufacturing revitalization through four key strategies.
First, the coal chemical industry and modern coal chemical equipment manufacturing have been included in the province’s four new pillar industries. Second, the Taizhong and Shanxi Fengxi bases are focusing on developing critical equipment such as pulverized coal gasifiers, coke oven gas conversion furnaces, and large-scale synthesis reactors to build a complete domestic production system for synthetic ammonia, methanol, dimethyl ether, and coal-to-oil projects.
Third, collaboration between research institutes, universities, and enterprises is being promoted to create a platform for industrial technology transformation, nurture innovation, and drive breakthroughs in areas like clean coal gasification and environmental protection. Finally, policy support is being introduced to foster the overall development of the coal chemical equipment industry, with priority given to enterprise-led technological innovation projects and national-level research initiatives.
