After more than two years of construction, Shanxi Province has made significant progress in developing its coal chemical equipment manufacturing industry. Two major bases have been established: a 30,000-square-meter Taiyang Heavy Machinery Group facility and a 50,000-square-meter Shanxi Fengxi Group base for non-standard equipment. These facilities are now actively involved in the design and production of high-pressure vessels, towers, glass-lined reactors, filtration systems, and compressors—marking a strong upward trend in the sector.
This information was shared at a recent meeting held by the Shanxi Chemical Equipment Company on October 11th, where industry leaders discussed the rapid growth of the coal chemical equipment sector. Over the past few years, the coal chemical industry has experienced substantial expansion, driven by increasing market demand. This has led to the formation of two key production bases in Shanxi.
Shanxi Fengxi Base has achieved remarkable success in producing unit equipment for chemical fertilizers, methanol, coal tar processing, and coke oven gas conversion. The base has completed 17 technological innovations, including the development of China’s first demonstration set of ash fusion coal pressure gasifiers. It also overcame challenges in designing large heat exchangers exceeding GB151 standards, successfully manufacturing the largest falling film evaporator in China with a heat transfer area of 4,100 m² and a weight of 157 tons. In collaboration with China Tianchen Chemical Engineering Company, it developed conversion devices for ammonia, methanol, and dimethyl ether from coke oven gas. Additionally, it independently developed methanol reactor technology, with projected sales revenue reaching 1 billion yuan by 2010.
Meanwhile, Taizhong Group's base specializes in pressurized gasification equipment from international brands like Shell, Texaco, GSP, and Lurgi, as well as synthetic fertilizers, methanol, dimethyl ether, and coal-to-oil production. It also produces equipment for coke oven gas and coal bed gas conversion, coal tar processing, and hydrogenation reactors for nuclear power. With an annual output value exceeding 1 billion yuan, it is expected to become the largest producer of coal chemical equipment in Shanxi.
Chen Shihai, deputy inspector of the National Development and Reform Commission, emphasized that between 2006 and 2020, China will invest over one trillion yuan in the coal chemical industry, with half allocated to equipment. Future investments will focus on new technologies and advanced equipment, aligning with the current developments in Shanxi.
According to recent data, out of the $13.974 billion invested at the Coal Expo, $5 billion went into Shanxi’s coal chemical industry, accounting for 35% of the total. To capitalize on this momentum, Shanxi plans to implement four key strategies to accelerate the growth of its coal chemical equipment manufacturing sector.
First, the coal chemical industry and modern equipment manufacturing will be included in Shanxi’s four new pillar industries. Second, the province will focus on developing key equipment such as coal gasifiers, coke oven gas conversion furnaces, and large-scale synthesis reactors to build a complete domestic production system for ammonia, methanol, dimethyl ether, and coal-to-oil projects. Third, it will promote collaboration between research institutions, universities, and enterprises to establish a platform for translating scientific achievements into industrial applications, nurturing innovation and leading technological breakthroughs in areas like coal gasification and clean fuel production. Finally, the government will introduce supportive policies to create a favorable environment for the industry’s development, prioritizing funding for key technological projects and supporting national-level industrial research initiatives.
