Formula fertilization expands small-sized fertilizer enterprises to develop space

In the past, small fertilizer companies struggled to compete with large corporations due to limited resources and market reach. However, the nationwide implementation of soil testing and formula fertilization has created new opportunities for these smaller players. A recent report from Hebei province highlights how this initiative is reshaping the industry. Soil testing and formula fertilization were launched in 2004 across China. Today, over 1,200 county-level experimental sites are supported by the state, along with nearly 200 local government-led pilot projects, and more than 1,400 areas implementing the program. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the project has yielded impressive results: a 5% increase in grain production, a 3% improvement in fertilizer efficiency, and an average gain of over 25 yuan per mu (about 667 square meters) in farm income. As a result, many fertilizer companies have adapted their operations to align with soil testing and formula fertilization. Some manufacturers now offer on-site soil testing and customized fertilizers. Yet, larger firms face challenges in adapting to the localized and variable nature of formula fertilization, which conflicts with their large-scale, mechanized production models. This mismatch increases costs and sales risks, making it harder for big companies to keep up. Meanwhile, small fertilizer firms are finding their niche. These companies often have flexible production lines, regional knowledge, and established distribution networks. In Langfang, Hebei, for example, 80% of counties produce compound, BB, and bio-organic fertilizers. Their ability to tailor products to local conditions gives them a competitive edge. They also benefit from close relationships with farmers, which enhances product acceptance and reduces marketing costs. Sanhe City’s Xiangfeng Fertilizer Co. has embraced this model. Instead of waiting for customers, their technicians travel to farms, conduct soil tests, and provide personalized fertilization advice. By leveraging local agricultural data and building grassroots sales networks, they deliver formula fertilizers directly to farmers, cutting down on distribution costs and meeting specific soil needs. Similarly, Jinfeng Biotechnology Fertilizer Co. in Yongqing County offers free soil testing and real-time guidance to farmers. With over 300 agrochemical service centers and a dedicated team, they have gained strong support from farmers and local authorities. Currently, more than 280 fertilizer companies nationwide provide soil testing and formula fertilization services, most of which are small or medium-sized enterprises. These firms are well-positioned to meet the growing demand, as the current supply still falls short of national needs. This presents a significant opportunity for small-scale companies to thrive in an evolving market.
