In January 2008, the U.S. Department of Energy announced its support for Pacific Ethanol's $24.32 million investment in constructing the first cellulosic ethanol verification unit in the northwestern United States. This project marks a significant step forward in the development of renewable energy technologies and is expected to play a key role in advancing the use of biomass for fuel production.
The facility will be located at Pacific Ethanol’s existing ethanol plant in Boardman, Oregon, and will utilize agricultural byproducts such as wheat straw, sawdust, and grain crop stalks as feedstock. The medium-sized unit is designed to produce 2.7 million gallons of ethanol annually, serving as a critical testbed for the technology developed by Danish company BioGasol ApS. This technology is capable of converting a wide range of biomass materials into ethanol, and the project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009.
As a leader in the field of biomass-to-ethanol innovation, Pacific Ethanol is working to expand the potential of cellulosic ethanol as a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels. By commercializing this process, the U.S. could significantly reduce its reliance on imported oil and lower greenhouse gas emissions. It is estimated that widespread adoption of cellulosic ethanol could cut millions of tons of COâ‚‚ emissions each year, contributing to both energy security and environmental sustainability.
