Industry experts noted that the epoxy resin sector is currently in a mature phase in developed countries, with a growing focus on expanding application areas and developing high-end products. Although China’s epoxy resin market still has some gaps, conventional products are already oversupplied. As a result, accelerating the development of unconventional and advanced products has become a critical challenge for the industry. The reporter spoke with several professionals about how to enhance the competitiveness of China's epoxy resin industry. They emphasized that domestic companies should prioritize the development and production of 618 or E-51 base resins. These bisphenol A-based epoxy systems are widely used globally, with foreign markets predominantly using 618 as the base resin, whereas China mainly relies on 6101 or E-44. Moreover, companies need to speed up the development of specialized products that are currently in short supply. While many Chinese firms compete in the general-purpose bisphenol-A epoxy resin market, foreign companies dominate segments such as heat-resistant, flame-retardant, water-based, and high-purity epoxy resins. To grow further, local enterprises should invest in products like phenolic epoxy resin, o-cresol formaldehyde epoxy resin, bisphenol F epoxy resin, alicyclic epoxy resin, phosphorus-containing epoxy resin, and light-curing epoxy resin. Additionally, they should accelerate the development of additives such as curing agents and reactive diluents. Industry insiders also highlighted that environmental and safety regulations are becoming stricter both domestically and internationally, significantly affecting the epoxy resin market. Companies must start planning now to develop eco-friendly alternatives. For instance, brominated epoxy resins are commonly used in copper-clad laminates and flame-retardant electrical castables, but bromine can harm the ozone layer. Therefore, it is essential for enterprises to quickly move toward non-halogenated flame-retardant epoxy resin products. In addition, respondents pointed out that while China’s epoxy resin industry isn’t too late to catch up, its growth has been relatively slow. Alongside strengthening R&D efforts, it is crucial to improve the commercialization of new technologies and expand market reach. By focusing on innovation, sustainability, and product diversification, the Chinese epoxy resin industry can position itself more competitively on the global stage.
