On December 11, the fifth meeting of the first board of directors of Dongfeng Yueda Kia Motors Co., Ltd. took place in Seoul, South Korea. During the meeting, the board approved the launch plan for the first plant and a development strategy for the second plant, which involves an investment of RMB 6.8 billion. This move is expected to transform Yancheng into a modern automobile industrial city with an annual production capacity of 450,000 vehicles.
Currently, major automotive manufacturers from South Korea, Japan, and Germany—along with global industry leaders—have established a presence in the region. Additionally, over 100 companies from Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Taiwan have provided support through logistics and service industries, contributing to rapid industrial growth.
Following the introduction of the "Maxima" economical sedan, Yancheng launched the large MPV Kwah and the 2.0L mid-size sedan "Yuan Ship," leveraging Hyundai Kia's strong R&D capabilities. A further investment of US$240 million led to the release of the Cerato sedan. After a successful year of trial sales in Europe and the U.S., it achieved over 100,000 units sold, becoming a top-selling mid-size car. This model filled the gap between the Maxima and Yuan Ship, enriching the Dongfeng Yueda Kia product lineup. The company now offers a wide range of products, including economical sedans, mid-size cars, premium vehicles, and MPVs. Another new model was scheduled for release in March 2007, with a total of seven new models planned by 2008, covering all key segments of the Chinese passenger car market.
In addition, Yancheng has partnered with Japan’s Fortune 500 company, Fuji Heavy Industries, on the Yueda Fuji special vehicle project, which invested 356 million yuan. The facility can produce 10,000 specialized vehicles annually, including world-leading compression garbage trucks. Upon completion of the first phase, the project is expected to generate over RMB 1 billion in revenue and contribute RMB 200 million in profits and taxes. The city also boasts a strong bus industry, with over 100 models available across various price ranges. In 2005, Zonda Motors was recognized as one of the top ten influential brands in China’s bus industry and won the “Best Buying Brand†award. Its super-large environmentally friendly bus, the JLY6137SBK, won gold at the National Bus Contest in Beijing.
Yancheng is actively developing industrial clusters to boost competitiveness. With participation from multinational automakers, state-owned enterprises, and private firms, the newly reactivated Yancheng No. 2 Plant—with a capacity of 300,000 units and a building area of 364,792 square meters—has been jointly developed by Dongfeng Yueda Korea Hyundai Kia. This initiative has placed Yancheng among China’s leading automotive manufacturing cities, enabling it to compete globally. By 2010, the combined capacity of the first and second plants is expected to reach 430,000 vehicles, capturing 8.3% of the Chinese passenger car market.
The Zhongda Group has acquired several passenger car manufacturers, and the construction of a luxury car production base spanning 10,000 acres marks a new era of large-scale development in the local auto industry.
According to data from the National Development and Reform Commission, every 1 yuan of value added in the auto industry generates 0.65 yuan for upstream industries and 2.63 yuan for downstream sectors. It also creates 1,015 employment opportunities across related industries. Recently, Yueda Group and Germany’s Evand Group launched a joint venture for automotive decorative fabrics in Yancheng, with a 250 million yuan investment and a 50,000 square meter facility, filling a gap in the city’s textile-based automotive production. Yancheng Automobile Co., Ltd. now has more than 120 supporting manufacturers, with a total production capacity of 450,000 units. The spare parts sector is expected to attract 8,090 enterprises, generating about 10 billion yuan in annual sales.
At the recent Yancheng (Shanghai) Investment Symposium, over 10 companies from South Korea, Taiwan, and Shanghai participated, showcasing projects in automotive electronics, instrumentation, interior design, and car trading. These developments highlight Yancheng’s growing role as a hub for automotive innovation and investment.
