In a simple motion, pressing the switch activates a system that channels river water into the building, transforming it into a comfortable living space—warm in winter and cool in summer. This innovative approach is inspired by the 2006 May 30 "City's New Energy Source Heat Pump Technology Symposium," where experts discussed the potential of using water source heat pump technology to create "water air-conditioned" spaces. Starting this year, Chongqing will begin constructing such buildings, with plans to make them publicly available next year. The city expects to cut air-conditioning costs by 25%, and by 2020, about 15% of the city’s buildings are projected to use this eco-friendly method.
Xu Yongguang, director of the City Building Technology Development Center, explained that surface water has been chosen as the preferred new energy source over groundwater, solar, or wind power. The focus is on utilizing Liangjiang River's water source heat pump technology to provide safe and efficient heating and cooling for the city. The river maintains a relatively stable temperature of around 22°C, making it ideal for heat pump systems that bring warmth in winter and coolness in summer.
With two major rivers and more than ten secondary streams, Chongqing boasts one of the richest water energy resources in the country, making it an excellent candidate for large-scale new energy development. Currently, only 50% of Beibei District meets the city's energy efficiency standards, while 95% of buildings are considered high-energy consumers. As part of its efforts to promote sustainable development, Chongqing has been selected for two demonstration projects under Phase II of the National New Energy Development Program: the Nanan District Hotel and the Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Center.
This year, 150,000 square meters of "water-air-conditioned" buildings will be completed. The city plans to implement "water air conditioning" in three stages: demonstration, industrialization, and large-scale promotion. Although installing heat pump systems may add some initial cost to traditional construction, the benefits are significant. Not only does it enhance indoor comfort, but it also reduces air-conditioning expenses by up to 25%, offering long-term savings for residents. As Chongqing moves forward, this green technology could become a model for other cities looking to balance comfort with sustainability.
