"Stalks change treasure" technology without "three wastes"

At harvest time, the smoke from burning straw in cities is always a serious problem. However, this issue is now expected to be significantly reduced thanks to innovative technology developed by Suzhou Zhongneng Technology Co., Ltd. Over four years of research, their team has successfully created biomass alcohol, xylitol, pulp, organic fertilizer, and fruit tree nutrient solutions using agricultural waste like corn straw. This technology is currently leading the nation, and what makes it unique is that the entire process produces no "three wastes" — meaning it achieves real "zero emissions." While producing fuel alcohol from food crops isn't new, turning agricultural waste like straw into useful products remains largely at the lab stage. Even when industrial projects have been attempted, most have struggled with inefficiency or failed altogether. In China alone, over 600 million tons of crop stalks are available annually, but the majority go unused or are burned on-site, causing both resource waste and environmental harm. According to the company’s representative, their technology can produce 100 kilograms of alcohol per ton of corn stalks, along with 300 kilograms of other valuable byproducts such as xylitol, pulp, organic fertilizer, and plant nutrients. All costs — including straw, water, electricity, enzymes, and acids — are accounted for, making the process highly cost-effective. With an investment of about 5,883 yuan, they can generate products worth around 7,000 yuan. The company has already built a demonstration plant in Xuzhou with an annual capacity of 3,000 tons of biomass alcohol, and it's set to begin operations next year. This marks a major step forward in transforming agricultural waste into sustainable, high-value products.
