Domestic car companies must use key components

On March 1 this year, Beijing became the first city in China to implement the National IV emission standards for vehicle exhaust. This marked a significant step taken by the Chinese government to cut down emissions and enhance air quality. By adopting the standard ahead of schedule, Beijing shortened the gap between its implementation and the European standards from ten years to roughly three years. This achievement reflects the substantial progress made in the technical capabilities of China's automotive engines and the growing strength of domestic engine manufacturers. Unlike previous times, this round of implementation did not negatively impact the sales of self-owned brand vehicles in Beijing. The cost increase due to engine upgrades was not passed on to consumers, showing that local automakers were well-prepared for the stricter regulations. They had already planned and adapted to meet the new requirements effectively. Despite these achievements, there is still a noticeable gap between China’s engine technology and that of foreign countries. Domestic companies face challenges such as limited independent R&D capabilities, insufficient innovation, and reliance on foreign technologies. Many high-tech components remain out of reach, and products with global competitiveness are still scarce. The situation is even more pronounced when it comes to engine parts. In the past, domestic automakers focused mainly on vehicle development and manufacturing, often neglecting the development of critical components like engines. As a result, key technologies—such as engine management systems, turbochargers, and variable valve systems—are still controlled by foreign companies. This dependency hinders the growth of a truly self-reliant automotive industry. In contrast, commercial vehicle diesel engines represent one of the strongest areas in China’s engine sector. Major companies like Yuchai, Weichai, and Chongchi have successfully upgraded their engines to meet National III standards, with some even preparing for National IV. These companies are also investing in advanced technologies such as electronic common rail injection, multi-valve systems, and exhaust purification, which are now being mastered domestically. Collaborations with international partners have further boosted the technological level of domestic diesel engines. For example, Chaochao introduced U.S. NGD 3.0 engines, while Weichai partnered with German Deutz to produce high-performance models. However, large-displacement, high-performance diesel engines over 10 liters are still dominated by foreign manufacturers. Fortunately, after years of market competition, domestic engine brands have managed to hold their ground and compete on equal terms with global giants. Both companies and government agencies are now focusing on developing key components. Some breakthroughs have already been made in parts manufacturing and system integration, including engine control systems. Only by mastering these critical technologies can China close the gap with international leaders and eventually produce world-class engine products. With continued investment and innovation, China has the potential to become a true powerhouse in the global engine manufacturing industry.
