China's highway engineering technology has made a major breakthrough

Recently, it was reported by the Technical Department of the Highway Division under the Ministry of Communications that China's cement pavement technology—once a critical component of highway engineering—has now reached world-leading standards. This advancement reflects not only the country's growing expertise in infrastructure development but also its ability to innovate and implement advanced construction techniques. The construction of highway cement concrete pavements involves five key processes: slipform paving technology for high-grade highways, track paving technology for primary and secondary roads, three-axis unit construction for second- and lower-grade highways, and manual or small-scale machinery methods for third- and fourth-grade roads as well as rural roads. The first three are large-scale mechanized techniques, while the last two rely on smaller equipment, making them more suitable for less developed or remote areas. According to recent reports, the adoption of new slipform paving technologies has significantly improved the quality and efficiency of highway construction in China. These innovations have provided reliable technical support for building durable and high-performance concrete pavements, marking a major milestone in the country’s highway construction capabilities. China is now on par with global leaders in this field. Since the release of the "Technical Specifications for Highway Cement Concrete Pavement Construction" in 2003, China's cement concrete pavement network has expanded rapidly. From 167,000 kilometers in 2002, it grew to 367,000 kilometers by the end of 2005, showcasing an impressive rate of development. As China continues to expand its vast highway infrastructure, expressways are expected to grow at an average annual rate of about 5,000 kilometers. Alongside this growth, various advanced technologies have also seen significant improvements. These include mountainous highway construction techniques, solutions for complex geological conditions, environmental protection and landscape road design, long-span bridge construction, special tunneling methods, traffic monitoring systems, intelligent transportation solutions, road maintenance practices, and more. Together, these advancements have formed a unique and comprehensive technical system tailored to China's specific needs and conditions.
