China's highway engineering technology has made a major breakthrough

In recent developments, it has been revealed by the Technical Department of the Highway Administration under the Ministry of Communications that China's cement pavement technology—considered a vital part of the country's highway engineering—is now at the forefront of global standards. This advancement reflects the nation's growing expertise in infrastructure development. The construction of cement concrete pavements on highways involves five key technologies and processes: slipform paving for high-grade highways, track paving for primary and secondary roads, three-axis unit construction for second- and lower-grade roads, and manual or small-scale machinery methods for third- and fourth-grade roads as well as rural roads. The first three are large-scale mechanized techniques, while the latter two rely on smaller equipment, making them more suitable for less developed areas. According to reports, the adoption of advanced slipform paving technologies has significantly improved the quality and efficiency of highway construction in China. These innovations have provided strong technical support for building durable and high-quality cement concrete pavements. This progress marks that China's highway cement concrete pavement construction technology is not only advancing but also reaching international standards. Since the release of the "Technical Specifications for Highway Cement Concrete Pavement Construction" in 2003, the total length of cement concrete pavements in China has increased dramatically—from 167,000 kilometers in 2002 to 367,000 kilometers by the end of 2005. This rapid expansion highlights the effectiveness of the new technologies being implemented. Moreover, with the continuous growth of China's vast highway network, expressways are expected to expand by approximately 5,000 kilometers annually.
