As the first domestically produced machine of its kind, it filled a critical gap in the domestic market and was officially recognized at the provincial level for its technological achievements. The innovation has reached international standards and was awarded the 2007 Tianshui Technology Progress First Prize. This breakthrough solidified Tianshui Forging’s leadership in the production of pipe-making equipment and ended China’s reliance on imported technology for large-diameter straight-seam submerged arc welded pipe lines, positioning China as the third country—after the U.S. and Germany—to manufacture such advanced machinery.
Steel pipe expansion machines are essential components in large-diameter straight-seam submerged arc welded pipe production lines. Due to their high technical complexity, precision requirements, and challenging manufacturing processes, many domestic companies struggled to develop such equipment for years. At the time, only a handful of foreign manufacturers, primarily from Germany and the U.S., were capable of producing these machines, and their prices were extremely high—often reaching up to 120 million yuan per unit. In China, all three existing production lines relied on imported expansion machines from Meer, Germany. These machines accounted for about 30% of the total cost of the entire production line, making them a crucial and expensive component.
After years of dedicated research and development, Tianshui Forging successfully created the ZS-TDT90-254×1220/12000 steel pipe expansion machine with independent intellectual property rights. This advanced machine is designed for expanding and straightening steel pipes, effectively eliminating internal stresses and deformations caused during forming and welding. It ensures that the geometric accuracy of the pipes meets strict specifications and offers a viable alternative to imported models. The machine’s price is just one-fifth of similar foreign products, breaking the international monopoly and opening up vast market potential.
On December 14, 2006, the machine passed inspection by Mexican clients and was successfully exported, marking an important step in Tianshui Forging’s global expansion. It received approval from a panel of renowned domestic experts and is now being evaluated by users in India, the U.S., and South Korea. Following successful technical negotiations, contracts are expected to generate over $8 million in foreign exchange, while also saving more than $24 million annually in import costs. This achievement not only strengthens China’s position in the global steel pipe manufacturing sector but also demonstrates the growing capabilities of Chinese engineering and innovation.
