Seiko has introduced a compact and lightweight electric tilt-retract steering column that will be showcased at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show, which runs from October 27th to November 11th, 2007. Traditionally, the tilt and retract mechanisms were operated separately using individual motors. However, this new design integrates both functions into a single centralized drive system, significantly reducing the overall size and weight of the unit. The company aims to bring this innovative steering column to the market by 2010.
The new mechanism measures just 100 × 160 × 35mm, featuring a 10% reduction in the number of parts and a 16% decrease in weight compared to previous models. By reconfiguring the spring arrangement from linear to parallel, the structural rigidity has improved by 20%, while the natural vibration frequency has increased by 10%. This results in less vibration during steering, enhancing driver comfort and control. Additionally, the dual-motor system works together to reduce the load on each motor, leading to a 40% reduction in power consumption. These improvements not only make the steering column more efficient but also contribute to better vehicle performance and energy savings.
