Seiko has introduced a compact and lightweight electric tilt-retract steering column that will be showcased at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show, which runs from October 27 to November 11, 2007. Traditionally, the motors responsible for tilting and retracting were separate, but this new design uses a centralized drive system that integrates both functions. This innovation not only reduces the overall size but also significantly cuts down the weight of the unit. The company aims to bring this advanced steering column to the market by 2010.
The new mechanism measures just 100 × 160 × 35 mm, with a 10% reduction in the number of parts and a 16% lighter weight compared to previous models. By reconfiguring the spring arrangement from linear to parallel, the rigidity has improved by 20%, while the natural vibration frequency has increased by 10%, resulting in less vibration during steering. Additionally, the cooperation between the two motors reduces the load on each, leading to a 40% decrease in motor power consumption.
