This afternoon in West Chicago, I, John Tulipano, found myself in the middle of quite an event. I happened to be near West Chicago Station 1 when the general alarm blared through the area. Without hesitation, I followed three fire engines and Tower Ladder 6 as they sped towards the scene of the fire.
When we arrived, it didn't seem like there was much visible initially. The fire was located in a research laboratory at Ball Seed, reportedly starting on the second floor in an incubator. Initial reports suggested that the situation was under control, but as always, firefighters moved quickly to ensure safety.
Attached are some photos I took during the incident. The first image shows a firefighter pulling out the hose from Engine 7 to prepare the standpipe system. Engine 7, a Pierce Velocity model, was the still alarm engine dispatched to the scene. In another photo, you can see a rear view of Engine 7 with its supply lines, hydraulic ladder rack, and attack lines already deployed. Tower Ladder 6, a 100-foot Pierce Arrow XT model, was sent to the roof to provide additional support.
Additionally, Carol Stream Tower 28 was placed on standby at one of West Chicago's stations, ready to assist if needed. These images capture the swift and coordinated efforts of the firefighting teams, ensuring that any potential risks were mitigated promptly.
It’s always fascinating to witness how these professionals operate under pressure, maintaining calm and efficiency even in challenging situations. It’s a testament to their dedication and training.
