West Chicago FPD

This afternoon in West Chicago, I, John Tulipano, found myself in the midst of quite the unexpected event. I happened to be near West Chicago Station 1 when the general alarm blared through the air. Without hesitation, I followed along as three engines and Tower Ladder 6 sped off toward the source of the call. The fire turned out to be located in a research lab over at Ball Seed. From what I gathered, initial reports suggested that the blaze had started in an incubator on the second floor. When I arrived, there wasn’t much visible activity happening on the exterior—just the usual hustle and bustle of firefighters preparing their equipment. As I wandered around, taking photos, I couldn't help but notice the impressive setup of West Chicago Engine 7. It’s a powerful Pierce Velocity model, and it was already hard at work setting up its standpipe. The attention to detail was evident as firefighters meticulously prepared everything they needed for action. Another striking image is that of Engine 7 from a rear perspective. With its supply lines, hydraulic ladder rack, and attack lines deployed, it looked ready for anything. Then there was Tower Ladder 6, a robust 100-foot Pierce Arrow XT model. It was dispatched to the roof, adding another layer of capability to the operation. Interestingly, Carol Stream's Tower 28 was placed on standby at one of the West Chicago stations. It was almost like having backup right within reach if needed. It’s always fascinating to witness how quickly these teams mobilize and coordinate during emergencies. Even though the situation seemed under control from my vantage point, I know every detail counts in firefighting operations. Taking these pictures not only preserves the moment but also highlights the dedication and professionalism of those involved. In situations like this, you realize just how crucial teamwork is. Each piece of equipment, each firefighter, plays a vital role in ensuring safety and minimizing damage. It’s humbling to see such skill and coordination in action.
