WACKER completes REACH first phase registration

Munich-based German Wacker Chemical Group announced last week that it has successfully completed the first phase of substance registration under the latest European chemicals legislation. The European Chemicals Agency confirmed that it had received 85 material files and issued corresponding registration numbers for all substances. Since then, WACKER has met the requirements of REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Licensing and Restriction of Chemicals) within the first phase of the registration period, allowing unrestricted production in the EU and importation of substances in EU countries.
Ogister Williams, a director of WACKER Group, stated: “All of the substances given in the material archives are registered with the European Chemicals Agency and are now registered. Submitting material files on time is for us. An important milestone has ensured that all our production sites in the European Union can continue to produce these substances and the products made from them. At the same time, we can also import these substances into the EU."
In the long process of REACH registration, WACKER's first step was the successful pre-registration at the end of 2008 of substances with an annual output of more than 1 ton. The WACKER Group has now prepared 250 files of other materials for the next phase of REACH. WACKER expects that the total cost of REACH required by 2018 will reach 30 million euros.
