The Spring Grove Fire Protection District in McHenry County recently received an early delivery of their new pumper/tanker from Toyne, based in Breda, Iowa. Engine 1844 features an HME 1871 Spectr cab paired with a tandem axle chassis, complete with a large extension and raised roof to accommodate the enclosed, top-mounted pump panel. This unit is set to replace an older 1985 Ford C-Series Pierce 1250/1000 engine and a 1980 GMC 7000/US Tanker 2,200-gallon tanker. It's a significant upgrade for the department, offering modern technology and improved functionality.

This pumper/tanker is equipped with a 1,500 GPM pump and comes with a 3,000-gallon water tank and a 40-gallon foam tank as standard. Both sides of the long body have high-side compartments, allowing for easy access to ladders and the portable tank via overhead hydraulic storage racks. This design makes it more efficient for firefighters to retrieve equipment quickly during emergencies.

One unique feature of Engine 1844 is its extendable chutes located just behind the pump module, which allow water to be discharged into a portable tank. Unlike most tankers that have rear chutes, these are positioned closer to the front of the vehicle. This setup helps streamline operations when transferring water between tanks or to remote locations.

The vehicle also features clear, visible NFPA-compliant chevron striping on the rear, ensuring visibility and compliance with safety standards. Overall, Engine 1844 represents a major step forward for the Spring Grove FPD, combining advanced engineering with practical, firefighter-friendly design elements. It's a solid investment in the future of emergency response in the area.
