Fire departments react to the severe weather

PRESS RELEASE

Prospect Heights Fire District Boosts Staffing in Response to Severe Winter Conditions

Starting Saturday, January 4th at 6:00 PM, the Prospect Heights Fire District has increased its on-duty personnel to better handle emergency situations without relying on assistance from nearby areas. This adjustment ensures that an additional ambulance is available and that the fire district’s water tanker can respond to fires across all areas, including those without fire hydrants.

Fire Chief Don Gould explained, “Heavy snowfall can make it difficult to access fire hydrants, and in extreme cold, water mains may break or hydrants may freeze, rendering them unusable. The water tanker plays a crucial role in these scenarios.” He also noted that during freezing temperatures, the pump on a fire engine could freeze if water isn’t flowing through the hoses. To address this, extra staff are now deployed in other vehicles when needed, even if the fire pump isn’t required for the call.

The fire district has had this contingency plan in place for years, and it's typically activated each winter, as it is now. So far, there have been no incidents directly linked to the severe weather. Chief Gould urges residents to call 9-1-1 immediately if they notice any issues, rather than waiting, as response times may be longer due to the current conditions.
