Last night, around 11 PM, The Fox Lake Fire Department received emergency calls about a fire at an apartment building located on the 500 block of Autumn Boulevard in Lakemoor. By the time they arrived—approximately four minutes after receiving the call—the firefighters discovered that the blaze had spread throughout the roof of the three-story, lightweight structure. Shortly afterward, a structural collapse occurred. This incident was declared a 3-11 for tankers and triggered a Box Alarm for the structural collapse, with at least 19 different fire departments responding to the scene.
Four tower ladders were dispatched to assist: Fox Lake, McHenry Township, Wauconda, and Round Lake. In addition to these, multiple handlines and ground-level master streams were utilized to combat the flames. The situation was particularly challenging due to the building's design and the intensity of the fire.
There were some interesting observations regarding the apparatus involved. For instance, Countryside and Grayslake both brought out their brand-new vehicles to the scene. Several units on-site were equipped with either Nightscan or Command Light towers, including engines from Antioch, Grayslake, and Round Lake, as well as squads from Fox Lake and Barrington. At one point during the latter stages of the fire, the Fox Lake Tower Ladder, which featured a Spartan/3D/Nova Quintech setup, positioned its articulating jib over the building from the fly-section of the ladder. McHenry Township sent four units: an engine, a tower, a tanker, and a squad. Round Lake had three units present: an engine, a tower, and a tanker. Lake Villa also brought three units: an engine, a tanker, and an ambulance. Grayslake had an engine and a tanker on-site, while Lake Bluff sent an engine, likely traveling the furthest distance.
One of the standout pieces of equipment was Antioch’s American LaFrance/Alexis engine, which was outfitted with a Nightscan system, providing ample lighting for the entire scene. Another notable vehicle was the Fox Lake squad, which featured two light towers capable of illuminating even the largest scenes effectively. Countryside showcased its newly acquired tanker, which was already hard at work at its second tanker box. In the background, Round Lake’s engine could be seen using a Command Light mounted on the cab roof to illuminate portable tanks. The Fox Lake Fire Department’s Nova Quintech Sky Arm tower ladder was particularly impressive, as it deployed its jib section from the main ladder, allowing firefighters to reach areas that would otherwise be inaccessible.

This fire highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts between multiple fire departments and showcased the advanced technology and equipment available to modern firefighting teams. Despite the challenges posed by the building's lightweight construction and the intensity of the blaze, responders worked tirelessly to contain and extinguish the flames, ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
