Fire departments react to the severe weather

Prospect Heights Fire District Boosts Staffing in Response to Harsh Winter Conditions

Starting Saturday, January 4th at 6:00 PM, the Prospect Heights Fire District has temporarily increased its on-duty personnel to better handle potential emergencies without relying on outside support. This decision ensures that an additional ambulance is available and that the fire district’s water tanker can respond to fires across all areas—whether or not they have access to fire hydrants.

Fire Chief Don Gould explained, “Heavy snowfall can block access to fire hydrants, and in extreme cold, water mains may crack or hydrants may freeze, rendering them useless. The water tanker plays a crucial role in these situations.” He also noted that during very cold weather, the pump on a fire engine can freeze if water isn’t flowing through the hoses. To address this, extra staff are being deployed in other vehicles as needed, rather than always requiring the use of the fire pump.

The fire department has had this contingency plan in place for years, and it’s typically activated during severe winter conditions—just like it is now. So far, there have been no major incidents directly linked to the current weather. However, the chief urges residents to call 9-1-1 immediately if they notice any issues, as response times may be slower due to the harsh conditions.

Palatine Fire Department needs help digging out fire hydrants

As temperatures continue to drop and snow accumulates, the Palatine Fire Department is working closely with local officials to ensure emergency services remain fully operational. Crews have been seen clearing snow around fire hydrants to maintain quick access in case of a fire. Residents are encouraged to stay alert, keep emergency numbers handy, and report any hazards they observe. With the ongoing cold snap, preparedness is more important than ever.
