CFD LODD FF/PM Chris Wheatley

Last Monday, August 9th, tragedy struck the Chicago Fire Department when CFD FF/PM Chris Wheatley of Truck Company 2 tragically lost his life after falling from a ladder near the roofline while responding to a fire at 615 W. Randolph. Chris's untimely passing has deeply affected everyone in the department and beyond. He was laid to rest yesterday, August 13, 2010, at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, following a solemn Mass held at St. John Fisher Church on South Washtenaw. The community came together to honor Chris with a heartfelt ceremony that reflected the deep respect and admiration he had earned throughout his career. The images from the day tell a poignant story of loss and remembrance. One photo captures the casket being carefully loaded onto Engine 5 for its journey to the church, while another shows dignitaries from the Chicago Fire Department saluting as the casket was carried out of the funeral home. The streets leading to St. John Fisher Church were lined with firefighters and officers from across the city, their presence a testament to the bonds forged within the brotherhood of firefighting. Beyond them stood members of the AFFI Honor Guard, representatives from numerous suburban Chicago fire departments, standing vigil in solidarity. Inside, those who knew Chris gathered to celebrate his life, as members of the department carried his casket from the church in a somber yet reverent procession. For those who wish to pay their respects or simply remember Chris, images documenting the day’s events can be viewed on Tim Olk’s website [link] and Larry Shapiro’s website [link]. These photographs not only capture the solemnity of the occasion but also highlight the incredible support and unity displayed by the firefighting community during times of grief. Chris Wheatley will always be remembered for his dedication, courage, and the positive impact he made on those around him. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the enduring spirit of the Chicago Fire Department. Rest in peace, Chris. You will never be forgotten.
