A new way to treat phantom limb pain in amputation patients

Doctors invented new ways to treat phantom limb pain in amputees.
Using a computer to generate augmented reality, the patient can see moving virtual arms and control them.
Mr. Johnson, 73, lives in Sweden and lost half of his right arm in a car crash 48 years ago. He experienced pain and discomfort from a broken limb every day after his elbow following an amputation.
In the past few decades, he has tried many treatments, including hypnosis, to no avail. In the last few weeks he began treatment at the Augmented Reality Clinic at Chalmers University of Technology. His pain has been significantly reduced due to the new computer program. The pain has eased and is now regularly used in his hometown.
Johnson said firsthand: “The pain is now much less, only a few seconds.” Almost all amputees lose their limbs but still have some feelings. Most amputees will also experience phantom limb pain. The exact reason is not yet clear. . It can be expressed as a greedy or itchy or trivial pain.
Johnson said firsthand, "Can you imagine? For 48 years, my hand has been a fist, but after a few weeks, through this training, I feel different. It opens." Mr. Johnson also learned to control his ghost. The action of the hand, even if he is not connected to the computer or see virtual limbs.
Max Ortiz Catalonia said: "The new treatment of the brain is a kind of muscle exercise. Being able to watch behaviors may be the key to treatment. The required amputee for the movement of the brain in the brain area is activated and the patient acquires vision. Feedback techniques make the brain believe that there is an arm to perform such a movement command. This can also be used as a rehabilitation aid for stroke or spinal cord injury patients."
