Mundelein and Libertyville Fire Department news

Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:

Two neighboring communities, Mundelein and Libertyville, are joining forces in a new collaboration aimed at improving efficiency and reducing costs for residents. The plan involves sharing a tower ladder, a key piece of equipment used by fire departments to access high-rise buildings and other challenging structures.

The agreement, approved by the Mundelein village board on Monday and expected to be finalized in Libertyville, allows Mundelein to use Libertyville’s tower ladder for an annual fee. This fee is designed to cover maintenance and future replacement costs, ensuring both towns benefit financially.

Although Mundelein's current tower ladder is still in good condition and doesn’t require immediate replacement, officials say the arrangement offers flexibility and long-term savings. Deputy Chief Bill Lark explained that the move provides the department with more options as they manage their resources wisely.

The deal hinges on Mundelein finding a way to sell, lease, or trade their existing ladder truck. Under the five-year agreement, Mundelein will pay $14,000 in the first year, with a 3% increase each subsequent year. In return, Libertyville’s fire department will provide assistance approximately five times annually.

The two villages already have a mutual aid agreement in place for structure fires, dating back to 2015. Fire Chief Rich Carani of Libertyville said the idea has been under discussion for about two years as both communities look for ways to stretch their budgets without compromising public safety.

Tower ladders typically last longer than other emergency vehicles because they don’t accumulate as many miles. However, replacing one can cost over $1.3 million, making shared ownership a smart financial decision.

Eric Guenther, Mundelein’s public safety director, emphasized that when considering operational costs, fuel, and maintenance, it makes sense to share such expensive assets. “It’s not just about saving money—it’s about being responsible with taxpayer dollars,” he said.

Libertyville’s ladder truck, which is 18 years old, is scheduled for replacement in 25 years. However, the village is exploring the option of refurbishing it to extend its lifespan by up to a decade, which would be significantly cheaper than purchasing a new unit.

Additionally, Libertyville’s location gives it a strategic advantage. It is only two miles away from Mundelein’s main high-rise area and most commercial zones, and it can reach the east side of the village without encountering railroad track barriers.
