Hubei Province has been actively engaged in phosphate ore beneficiation for the past two years, achieving impressive outcomes. The province has successfully reconstructed two concentrators, built four new ones, and put them into operation. As a result, the total processing capacity of phosphate ore now reaches 5.35 million tons annually.
According to the Hubei Provincial Phosphorus Chemical Market Management Office, there are four key factors driving the rapid growth of phosphate ore processing in the region. First, the government has strengthened the management of phosphate rock resources. On November 5, 2004, the Hubei Provincial Government issued the Interim Measures for the Management of Phosphorus Resources. The provincial phosphorus chemical authority has been deeply involved in the development of phosphate ore processing, encouraging enterprises to collaborate with research institutions on mineral processing projects and inviting experts to introduce advanced technologies.
Second, the province has promoted the "three combinations" strategy—mining, fertilizer production, and mineralization—to extend the processing chain of phosphate products. Before 2004, only one company in Huangmailing had achieved integration of these areas. After nearly three years of effort, companies such as Yihua, Yangfeng, Dagukou, Xiangyun, Saning, and Dongsheng have all embarked on the "three combinations" path, which is considered essential for sustainable development in mineral processing.
Third, the scarcity of high-grade phosphate resources has pushed companies toward more efficient processing. After over 20 years of extraction, rich mineral reserves have significantly declined. Meanwhile, the rapid growth of high-concentration phosphate fertilizers in recent years has increased demand for high-grade ore. With limited increases in overall mining output, the supply of high-grade concentrate has become tight, forcing companies to explore low-grade ores and invest in enrichment technologies to maximize resource utilization.
Fourth, rising phosphate rock prices have created favorable conditions for beneficiation. Hubei implemented quasi-transportation management for phosphate products, using total control measures that not only helped protect natural resources but also caused a significant increase in phosphate ore prices. This price hike has provided economic incentives for processing lower-grade ores, making it more viable for companies to invest in beneficiation technologies and improve their profitability.
