According to the latest data from the German Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers Federation (VDMA), the number of orders for plastics and rubber machinery in Germany fell sharply by 47% year-on-year in the first half of the year, but it has now begun to stabilize. According to VDMA, "Machine manufacturers are beginning to report new project negotiations and inquiries."
VDMA said that the number of orders for plastics and rubber machinery is an important indicator of the economic prosperity of the downstream chemical industry. Last year, German plastic and rubber machinery manufacturers accounted for 25% of the global market share. In the first half of this year, the number of domestic orders fell by 42% year-on-year, while the number of export orders fell by 48% year-on-year, and total sales revenue dropped by 28% year-on-year.
In the first half of the year, the number of German plastic and rubber machinery export deliveries decreased by 36.9% year-on-year. The number of plastics and rubber machinery delivered to China, the United States, and Russia fell by 34.7%, 50%, and 41.9%, respectively, year-on-year. However, the number of machinery delivered to India was relatively stable, which also increased by 0.3% year-on-year.
A VDMA news spokesperson said that in 2008 the total sales revenue of plastics and rubber machinery made in Germany reached 5.6 billion euros (about 8.2 billion U.S. dollars), of which 72% were exported to foreign markets. For this year, VDMA expects sales revenue for plastics and rubber machinery to drop by 40%. However, sales of German plastics and rubber machinery will increase in 2010.
