Chicago firefighters responded to a fire at an industrial building located on the 9200 block of South Baltimore Avenue early on December 14, 2015. During the incident, a firefighter fell through a floor opening and triggered a Mayday alert with a Still & Box Alarm and EMS Plan I. The firefighter was quickly rescued and taken to Christ Hospital in critical condition.
According to ABC7Chicago.com, the fire broke out in a three-story structure under construction around 2:40 a.m. Monday. Several floor openings were reported, and while firefighters were battling the blaze, one fell into one of them. A Mayday call was issued, and emergency responders performed CPR on-site before transporting the injured firefighter to Advocate Christ Medical Center.
Fire officials confirmed that the fire started on the second floor and was fully under control by approximately 3:45 a.m. Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago later stated that the firefighter, from Tower Ladder 34, was conducting a search on the second floor when he fell into an open elevator shaft leading to the basement. Emergency crews quickly accessed the area and transported him via ambulance to Christ Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
From the Chicago Tribune, it was reported that the victim was Dan Capuano, a 42-year-old firefighter with 15 years of service. He was the father of three children. According to WGN-TV, Capuano was injured about 20 minutes after crews arrived at the scene of a fire at a vacant warehouse on 92nd Street and Baltimore Avenue.
The Chicago Building Department was dispatched to assess the structural integrity of the building following the incident. As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of a dedicated public servant who gave his life in the line of duty.
