Cars that matter Canada's four marine car rental self-drive Raiders

First, choose a car rental company

Rent a car on the travel agent website, enter the time and location of the car you want to pick up, the time and location of the return car, and the type of car you want. You will be given a list of car rental company quotes for you to choose. These quotes are high or low, the name of the car rental company is also strange, how to make choices for rookies is really a problem.

Before that, I also did some homework and read some other people's introductions to North American car rentals. It is said that there are mainly several factors that determine the price:

1, the company's scale and brand. Large companies and big brands will offer slightly higher prices, and small companies' cars will be cheaper. So who is the big brand car rental company? The Hertz and AVIS are often cited here.

2, the old and new car. The new car price is high. This is a good understanding. But for car rental companies, how new are their cars? Some people cite AVIS's cars as being thousands of kilometers away. If so, that would really be a new car.

3, mileage restrictions. Unlimited mileage, quotes will be higher. If you limit the mileage, only a reserve price is quoted. Once your actual mileage exceeds the limit, the excess will be added.

4, whether to return the car in different places. If the pick-up location and the return location are not in the same city, the price will be higher.

For me, the first big brand I believe, the second I believe new car, so I chose AVIS.

There is another reason why I chose AVIS. Someone praised the AVIS service online and said that if you have ordered a car that is out of stock, they will upgrade for you to a more upscale car for free.

If it is determined which company's car to rent, you can also go directly to their official website to place an order. However, according to the guidance of netizens, I also compared it and found that the price on Hotwire is indeed cheaper.

(The picture below shows the counter of the car rental company in the baggage claim hall of St. John's Airport. At 11 o'clock in the evening, no one else is in front of the company counter. Only Hertz and AVIS are on duty.)

Second, select models

Which type of car to rent is another issue to consider. The models listed by the car rental companies range from economy to luxury, from cars to SUVs. Each category has a representative model. For AVIS, the representative model of the economical model is the Chevrolet Spark. The standard model is the modern Sonata, and the full-size SUV model is the GMC. Acadia, and so on.

The road conditions in the four provinces of the ocean are very good. The car does not have the task of climbing mountains and wading water. Even a small-size hatchback sedan can be competent. There is no need to rent a big four-wheel drive. Taking into consideration the safety, comfort and economy of long-distance, high-speed driving, I chose the full-size sedan (Full Size), which represents the Chevrolet Impala. Two car rentals, I chose this category.

When I got to the AVIS counter at St. John's Airport, the attendant told me they didn't have the car I ordered here, so I upgraded to Ford's Escape SUV.

I had considered this SUV when I chose the model, but this car was much more expensive than the one I rented, so I gave up and I didn't expect the rumors that the online "models are out of stock, free upgrades" were fulfilled.

Another rumors on the internet, "AVISs are new cars of thousands of kilometers," have also been fulfilled. The Escape I got at St. John only ran for 1,407 kilometers, an absolute new car!

This red rose Escape I opened in the provinces of NB, PEI and NS for four days. When I started, I thought. When I got to St. John's car in the next journey, it would be best for them to upgrade to this car.

I want to have something. At the AVIS counter at St. Johns Airport, the attendant told me that they didn't have the full-size car I ordered and had upgraded to Ford Escape. Same as the car I had just returned from Halifax airport, but it was grey. More exaggerated is that this small gray car is still newer than the small red car in front, only 1211 kilometers on the odometer.

(The map below shows the dirt road leading to the Cape Tryon lighthouse on Prince Edward Island. This 800-metre-long dirt road is the only road I encountered in the entire process without a paved road. Note that AVIS stipulates that their cars are not allowed to be paved. The pavement.)

Third, about insurance

After selecting the car rental company and car model, there are some options to choose from, the most important of which is insurance. Car insurance, not insurance to the insurance company, but to the car rental company. To put it plainly, the car rental company itself is the "insurance company" of its own car. Here it is necessary to introduce the main types of insurance listed by the car rental company:

The loss and damage insurance of the car: This protection is the car damage caused by the car being stolen or the tenant's own carelessness. If you lose your car, or if you have hit the car yourself, you can be exempted from this insurance. If you do not have insurance, you can only pay for it. However, many people in North America have car insurance for their credit cards. As long as you use this credit card to rent a car, you can claim compensation for such things. Therefore, North Americans don't invest much in this car rental.

Upgraded third party liability insurance: Canadian car licenses are directly linked to third party liability insurance. In other words, the owner can only obtain the third party liability insurance to get the license plate. The third-party liability insurance that the car rental company invests in its vehicles is based on the prescribed lower limit, with a lower limit. If you have rented a car out of an accident and hit someone else, the amount of the claimed amount exceeds the third-party liability insurance coverage that the car rental company has insured. The excess will only be your own pocket. So, here's a car rental company to give you a choice: you can pay for third-party liability insurance upgrades, increase the amount of claims.

In addition, there are driver's and passenger's safety insurance, etc., which will not be explained. In short, these insurance options are not mandatory, if you choose to increase insurance, we must add additional money.

Whether or not I need to buy insurance, this individual takes an idea. I never bought it anyway.

(The map below shows that Canada's four marine provinces have good road conditions, few vehicles, and beautiful scenery. There are perfect facilities along the way. It is an excellent paradise for driving.)

Fourth, place an order

In addition to insurance, there are additional, optional items, such as GPS navigation. If you choose a model without GPS, there is an option to ask if you want to rent a GPS. Rent a GPS and charge about 16 CAD per day. So, if you rent a car for ten days or eight days, you might as well pay for a GPS. If you sell more than 100 Canadian dollars in the store, it will be very useful.

The final amount, in addition to adding your chosen payment items (insurance, renting GPS, etc.), plus various taxes and fees. Note that Canadian standard car rental terms and fees apply only to motorists over 25 years of age. If you are between 21 and 25, you will be charged an additional fee.

With all options selected, you can place orders.

Renting a car on different network agents requires different information. Some simply need to leave contact information such as name, email, and telephone, while others require credit card and driver's license information. But generally do not need to pay in advance. Car rental directly on AVIS's official website, if you pay in advance there will be a certain discount.

After submitting an order online, you will soon receive confirmation from your website.

Check the confirmation email received and carefully check that the information listed above is consistent with the information you submitted when you booked.

Car rental orders can be cancelled at any time and there is no fee.

V. Mileage limit

During this trip, I rented two cars. The first section was taken in St. John (NB), and Halifax (NS) returned; the second was in St. Johns (NL). Pick up the car and return the car in place. Both sections of the car are rented by AVIS and are all orders placed on the Hotwrie website.

When checking the confirmation email sent by Hotwire, I found that there was a limit on the length of the car hired in St. Johns (NL). I did not pay special attention to this point before placing my order. Before I just read the car rental conditions from St. John to Halifax, I knew that there was no limit to the length of the section, and I did not pay attention to the latter. Since both segments are the same company's vehicle (AVIS) and the same website (Hotwire), I think the terms should be the same.

In St. Johns (NL), this journey is limited to 150 kilometers per day, which exceeds the number of kilometers, and adds 0.12 US dollars ($0.15) per km. According to my itinerary, the number of kilometers to run on Newfoundland is expected to be longer than the first three provinces. If the mileage is limited, the final cost will be high. So I went online and checked to find out which car company had unlimited mileage in Newfoundland. As a result, it was found that although many companies called Unlimited mileage on the website, when you place an order, the information displayed changes to the Limied mileage.

Did the cars on Newfoundland limit the mileage? Hold this question on Tripadvisor to find the answer. Sure enough, someone said that the rules for renting cars on Newfoundland Island are such that as long as they are personal car rentals, there are mileage restrictions. If you buy a car that hasn’t sold, it’s probably because the car rental company knows that Newfoundland is relatively unprepared. The distance between towns and tourist attractions is far away. The mileage of the car will be longer, so it’s possible to formulate such a policy. .

(The image below shows a beautiful scene in Newfoundland where a highway stretches into the distance.)

Six, pick up the car

AVIS's counters at St. Johns Airport (NB) and St. Johns Airport (NL) are in the hall where checked baggage is taken.

The procedure for picking up the car is simple. A driver's license, credit card, and signature are required. The staff will then give you the car rental contract and the car key, and tell you the parking lot location and parking space number.

Car rental contracts are the standard format clauses, printed brochures, it is necessary to look roughly. For example, as stated above, only the renter and his or her spouse or common-law partner in Canada can drive the car, and it must be over 25 years old. Of course, the existence of a legitimate and applicable driver’s license is a major prerequisite.

The car park found the car and found a problem: the car had only the rear license plate and no front license plate. Can this car hit the road? To be on the safe side, call AVIS's service number and ask. AVIS's answer is no problem. Several provinces here are only sending a single vehicle sign and hanging in the rear of the car. They say that it is to save money. It is enough to think that a car has a license plate. Two pieces are waste.

Open the door and go by car!

(Below, the Ford Escape 1 with a starting range of only 1407 kilometers left behind in Carleton, Prince Edward Island. This vehicle carried us 1271 kilometers in the three provinces of NB, PEI and NS. There is no previous license plate.)

Seven, return the car

The places where I returned the car twice were Halifax Airport (NS Province) and St. Johns Airport (NL Province). There are clear signs on the roads outside the two airports that instruct you to go to the car rental company's dedicated parking lot at the airport.

AVIS staff at the parking lot of Halifax Airport pick up the car at the scene and read your credit card fees. Because this journey is unlimited, the final charge is the amount on the order: 487 Canadian dollars. The number of car rental days for this trip is 4 days and mileage is 1271 kilometers.

At the St. Johns airport, return the car to go to the counter in the hall. Write down the mileage before you get off and return the time to the AVIS staff. During this journey, I rented for 3 days and ran for 1,664 kilometers. The base price on the order is $254 (450 km for 3 days). Since the extra mileage is exceeded, the final price is $490.

There are two points to explain about returning a car:

The first is to return the vehicle with full oil, and not too much after the last full kilometer of oil. I think that there should not be a problem with 30 or 40 kilometers. I filled up the oil in downtown Halifax and ran to the airport to return the car. The distance was about 30 kilometers. The AVIS staff checked the trip computer while picking up the car. No objection was raised.

The second is whether it is necessary to clean the vehicle before the vehicle. Because of the high speed, the windshield and front face of the car are all the bodies of small flying insects. In addition, on Newfoundland, I caught up with the construction section. The body was full of dirt and looked dirty. So, after entering the city, I purposely went to the car wash shop and rushed. When I returned the car, I also asked the staff of AVIS whether I needed to clean the car and answered it completely.

(Below, the Ford Escape No. 2 with a starting range of only 1,211 kilometers is refuelling. This vehicle carries us on Newfoundland and ran for 1,664 kilometers. Before it was sent home, it had to eat and drink.)
