First, the braking torque is large. Brake torque up to 4000 N.m. The braking torque capability of the eddy current retarder is mainly 2000-3000 N.m. In order to ensure a reliable transmission of the large braking torque, the hydraulic retarder is generally matched with a more powerful gear end drive shaft.

Second, the weight is light and the installation volume is small. Take the Fastener hydraulic retarder as an example, from 2000-4000N.m, the weight is only 65kg-85kg, while the eddy current retarder 2000N.m has already weighed 175kg, 3000N.m actually weighs 450kg. Because the huge weight eddy current retarder requires a separate suspension system to carry its weight. Third, the continuous braking performance is strong. Braking thermal decay is the bottleneck faced by the eddy current retarder, which causes the eddy current retarder to not brake for a long time. After more than 10 minutes of braking, the rotor of the eddy current retarder will be red hot. Start over-temperature protection and lose the ability to continue to slow down. In contrast, the hydraulic retarder can use the engine cooling system to dissipate heat, ensuring that the operating temperature does not exceed 125 degrees, and the powerful continuous cooling capability ensures continuous braking performance. Even if the brake performance is continuously braked for a long time, there will be no slight decline.

Fourth, energy consumption is small. Eddy current retarders generally require a current of 112A-180A (3000Nm). Such a huge power consumption is unbearable for the generator, so a vehicle equipped with an eddy current retarder needs to be equipped with a large generator . This not only wastes the power of the engine, but also presents a severe challenge to the already crowded engine compartment. The hydraulic retarder only needs a current of up to 1A for the control circuit, and the power consumption is only the same as that of the same sound, and the power of the engine is not wasted.

5. The "studio" has a low temperature. The operating temperature of the eddy current retarder is as high as 500 °C -800 °C, the surface of the rotor is red hot, and the relatively closed chassis can not provide sufficient cooling airflow. If the heat is bad, it is close to flammable objects, which is easy to cause The whole vehicle is on fire. Moreover, there have been vehicles that have spontaneously ignited the vehicle due to the excessive temperature of the rotor of the eddy current retarder, which ignited the plastic bag that was wound into the chassis. On the contrary, the hydraulic retarder can keep the working temperature at about 125 °C, and it has no adverse effect on any adjacent components. Even after long downhill, it can immediately stop and park without any thermal deformation. There is no reduction in the retarding ability of starting the driving.
