With a total investment of nearly 1.5 billion yuan, Zhongyuan Petrochemical's ethylene raw material route reform (MTO) project has recently been approved by China Petrochemical Corporation and officially settled in Liyang. This marks the entry into the implementation stage of the methanol-to-olefin technology developed by Sinopec, and is an important step in the scale-up of domestic technology for coal-based olefins.
Methanol to olefin technology is a new way to make olefins from non-oil feedstocks. The project is in line with the national industrial policy. The construction scale is to build a new 600,000 tons/year (feed) methanol to olefins. The existing polyethylene plant will be tapped to 260,000 tons/year and a new 100,000 tons/year polypropylene plant will be built.
In recent years, the development of coal chemical projects in Henan Province has been rapid, and only in Fuyang, coal-to-methanol has produced a capacity of 1 million tons per year. The era of high oil prices has given the resource more room to add value. The implementation of this project will further enhance the overall strength and core competitiveness of Zhongyuan Petrochemical.
