Oxford University Engineers Develop New Smart MOF Sensors

[China Instrument Network Instrument R&D] Crime Prevention, Terrorism Prevention, Environmental Monitoring, Reusable Electronics, Food Safety, These may be only a small part of a new field of chemical sensors that can be subverted.

In a study in Advanced Materials, engineers at Oxford University used material compounds called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to develop "photochemical" active nanoscale sensing technology. The material senses and responds to light and chemicals and changes color noticeably based on the detected substance.
Photonic sensors are a rapidly growing and rapidly expanding global market. Research at Oxford University can be used to develop photonic material compounds called metal-organic framework sensors (MOFs) at low cost. This will apply to a variety of new and innovative applications, including hand-held medical devices for non-invasive diagnosis and treatment, biosensors for preventing chemical poisoning and food contamination. Smart MOF photonic sensors can also be used to protect society from crime and terrorism. Possible applications range from wearable personal protective equipment to anti-counterfeiting technology, and reusable optical-based luminescence sensors to prevent harmful environments such as nitro- explosives and toxic gases.
MOFs are highly adjustable and are called "solid molecular sponges" with the ability to absorb and respond to some solvents and gases. They consist of a highly porous framework in which metal atoms are bridged by organic linker molecules. The physical and chemical properties of these frames can be designed to allow scientists to control the exact function of the material.
Professor Jin-Chong Tan, head of the Multifunctional Materials and Composites (MMC) Laboratory at Oxford University's Engineering Department, said: "This new material has excellent physical and chemical properties and will open the door to many unconventional applications. MOF materials have become More and more intelligent, further research can be used for engineering smart sensors and multifunction devices."
The team has taken active steps to transform this technology into a social impact, and in July 2017, it cooperated with Samsung Electronics Co. to submit a patent. In the coming months, researchers will explore the medical applications of these materials, such as the deployment of photochemical sensors with built-in diagnostic hand-held respiratory testers for conditions such as diabetes.
Recently, this ground-breaking study was awarded by the European Research Council (ERC) for a combined donation of 2.4 million euros. This funding will support Professor Tan's team in the development of smart photonic sensors based on MOF material technology.
Abhijeet Chaudhari, a co-author of the study, has discovered an unconventional synthesis strategy for the fabrication of porous 2D nanosheet (OX-1) 3D MOF materials, which may revolutionize the field of photonic sensors.
Prof. Tan said: “Reducing the typical three-dimensional (3D) frame structure of MOF to generate two-dimensional (2D) morphology is similar to local two-dimensional nanomaterials such as chalcogenides, graphenes, and oxide nanoplates, which are difficult to achieve. However, the development of new 2D MOF materials is very important for advanced applications in the field of engineering, such as photonic sensors and smart switches, thin film electronics and sensors."

Express Electric Pizza Delivery Scooter uses a 60-72 Volt removable lithium battery system. As a result, there are more battery options to help ensure range capabilities. In addition the 1000-3000 watt brushless motor gives a strong climbing ability and good acceleration. The Electric Pizza Delivery Scooter can be fitted with optional reverse to assist with the weight if the Electric cargo scooter has a full load.
Delivering pizza and cargo requires getting on and off many times per day.  Hence we fitted a flat floor to make this easy.
Numerous rear carry boxes are available including a heated rear box to keep the food warm during delivery duties.
