Commercial building fire in Des Plaines, 12/29/17

On December 29, 2017, Des Plaines firefighters were dispatched to a fire at the Car-X Muffler shop located at 1108 E. Oakton, approximately half a mile from Station 62. Upon arrival, Engine 62 reported visible flames and immediately began an interior attack. Within minutes, the fire became apparent from multiple sides and even through the roof, prompting the decision to transition to an exterior attack for safety. The incident was escalated to a working fire, with both Des Plaines tower ladders deployed to combat the growing blaze. The B-sector wall collapsed shortly after, taking part of the roof with it. In response, a MABAS Box Alarm was activated, bringing in additional resources. Park Ridge Tower Ladder 36 was sent to the rear of the building, where it provided a third elevated master stream supported by a Rosemont engine. A wide range of units responded to the scene, including Des Plaines Engines 61, 62, and 63, Towers 61 and 63, Ambulances 61, 62, and 63, and Battalion 61, along with units 6100 and 6101. Mutual aid support came from Park Ridge, Rosemont, Glenview, North Maine, Elk Grove Township, Schiller Park, Morton Grove, Skokie, Northbrook, Wheeling, and Mount Prospect. This was the first of several updates covering the incident, which drew significant attention due to its intensity and the number of emergency units involved. Several photographers were on-site, capturing dramatic images of the fire, including massive smoke columns, collapsing structures, and fire engines in action.
